There are so many wonderful elements in this contemporary farmhouse kitchen: classic, simple lines, a neutral color palette that allows for endless accessorizing, a built in hutch offering tons of storage, counter, and display space, an island with storage, seating for three and gorgeous sculpted legs, and yummy Taj Mahal quartzite countertops and backsplash tile from Walker Zanger.

This Westside contemporary Craftsman cottage renovation and addition turned a run-down 1940s bungalow into a family's dream home, with light, airy, open spaces that fit the way we live now.  A two story addition discreetly added to the back of the home dramatically increased the square footage and provided a kitchen/great room/powder room and laundry area, as well as a couples' retreat on the upper level with two huge walk-in closets, a luxurious master bath, and balcony to the treetop views and ocean breezes. Beadboard Nantucket Country Cottage Style Kitchen-Tarzana, CA

This Tarzana, CA,  home, reimagined by interior designer Barbara Stock, appeared on the cover of Romantic Homes magazine. Purchased as a rundown fixer, the house was given new life and light with an 1100 sf addition, and top to bottom reworking and renovation of the existing space.  We kept the best of the old--beamed wood ceilings, wood paneled walls, nooks and crannies--and lovingly opened up, repurposed, added, and renovated the rest to live for today. Rustic Cottage Renovation  Exterior- Calabasas, CA

Four week renovation of a 1750 square foot residence in Monte Nido, an oak-laden equestrian hamlet in Calabasas, CA. The front exterior was updated with a new roof, new windows, a crisp gray and white color scheme, and an eye grabbing coral red front door. The master bath and guest bath were complete renovations. The kitchen retained its cabinets, which were painted, and all else was replaced. The double sided brick fireplace is the focal point of the living room and kitchen/family room, enhanced by new engineered wood floors. The existing wood ceilings were painted white to lighten dark spaces, while the original beams were left in their sandblasted state. New French doors in the kitchen and master bedroom open to the back yard, where the arbor was painted white to lighten the space. Slate floors were added to the patio to enhance the spectacular outdoor fireplace, and complete the serene outdoor dining experience. The home was minimally staged for sale, and sold in multiple offers.


Rustic Cottage Renovation Before and After, Calabasas, CA

La Jolla Kitchen Renovation

This kitchen renovation in La Jolla, CA,  was part of a whole house renovation that involved reworked spaces, master bedroom/bath/closet redesign, guest bath update, a custom family room media center, and a large home office with custom cabinetry. Unfortunately, the home was sold before I could get finished photos of all rooms, but I am including one of the design concept drawings for the kitchen.

East Coast Traditional Beadboard Cottage Remodel Master Bedroom Dressing Area

This 1950s classic California cottage was treated to a complete remodeling of its kitchen and breakfast area, opening the space to the family room and views of the lush backyard and pool. At a later date, the master bedroom, dressing room, and master bath were also renovated, by raising the ceilings, adding beams, custom cabinetry, and a new floor plan and  clawfoot tub in the bath.  Soft aqua and yellow wall colors finish the romantic scheme.

Mother-in-Law / Young Adult Suite / Garage Conversion

Sometimes, changing life and family circumstances dictate architectural and design choices. When welcoming visiting parents and two young adults put a strain on her existing home, my client asked me to design a garage conversion to accommodate everyone, and to make her life easier.  This was my third project with this client, having previously remodeled her kitchen and master bath, so I understood her aesthetic and how to tie in the old with the new.

The area to be converted was a two car garage, a small bedroom and bath, and the existing laundry room.  The requirements were to configure two guest bedrooms, an ADA compliant guest bath, plenty of storage space, and an updated laundry room.  My client's family  and guests  now each have a haven to come home to,  offering a warm welcome and  privacy for all.  

In the future, the homeowner has many options for the space, including using it for a live-in caretaker, or as a long-term or AirB&B rental for extra income.  

In recent years, Los Angeles has relaxed its zoning laws to allow more renovations of this type.  However, there are still important requirements and limitations that must be incorporated, making projects like this a bit of a Rubik's cube. I welcome the challenge!

White Contemporary Farmhouse KItchen Update, Thousand Oaks, CA

My client had just bought this  home in Thousand Oaks, CA, which was beautifully decorated in authentic French Country style.  It fit my client's furniture perfectly, but she wanted to update the kitchen, adding a bit of contemporary farmhouse feel to the mix. Here, we kept  and added to the existing cabinets, and updated the countertops with Elegance White quartzite and Arabesque multi-toned backsplash tile on the cooktop wall.

West Hills Kitchen Remodel

The lovely results of this West Hills kitchen remodel prove "budget" does not have to be a dirty word. Using stock cabinets and keeping the original floor plan  in place + changing a central dining table to an island, added much needed storage. The big benefit, however, was the freeing up of funds for high end finishes like natural stone countertops, a mosaic tile backsplash, driftwood finish floors, a farmhouse sink, microwave drawer and stainless appliances.

Custom Hollywood "Glam" Velvet Banquette

Just delivered this incredible, 10' long, custom jade green lush velvet banquette to my client in Porter Ranch. It was designed to offer seating for this Hollywood Glam style loft/pool table/home theater/bar space.

 The color was chosen for the "wow" factor, and to compliment the client's artwork of old Hollywood movie stars hanging above it. 

It provides ample seating, while allowing clearance for the pool table to come. The rug was also chosen for the space. Next up: replacing the temporary leather sofa, and a built in media/bar cabinet.

This 1960s tract house was turned into a French country villa, using Versailles pattern stone floors, five inch oak plank flooring, custom cabinetry, marble counters, and an assemblage of antiques, family treasures, and flea market finds.

Calabasas Home Remodel-Living Room

A six week whole house renovation that involved updating, not gutting.  Kitchen and bath cabinets stayed but got  a coat of paint, new hardware, and granite or marble countertops.  New appliances, paint, and gorgeous maple engineered hardwood floors by Max Windsor made it all feel new.  A mix of new and well-loved furnishings make it feel like home.

Family Room Update, Encino, CA

This was such an interesting project.  My clients had an extensive list of desires for their new family room decor: to incorporate their existing Mackenzie Childs bar stools, while adding both Japanese/Asian  and contemporary elements to the room. They wanted a leather sofa and chair, and a pair of upholstered club chairs. They disliked any large patterns or bright colors, wanted a predominantly gray color scheme--and the wife wanted to incorporate her favorite color-purple!  Voila--these photos are pre-accessories and artwork, but you get the idea...

Beverly Hills Kitchen Renovation

My clients tasked me with the redesign of their dated kitchen, creating a new floor plan, while keeping the main appliances in existing locations. We removed a peninsula, added an eight foot long island with prep sink, microwave, and warming drawer, and added massive cabinet, pantry, and counter space. This included a built-in Miele coffee maker with adjacent coffee bar and baking zone, a second pantry for small appliances and bakeware, a dog-dedicated pantry, and a pool/wet bar/snack bar for their young family and guests. The wife wanted to showcase her collection of Le Creuset cookware and red accessories. We found the vivid turquoise handmade custom Country Floors backsplash tile provided the perfect contrast, and inspired the island color.  She also wanted Saltillo tile floors, which I hadn't used in years, but look fresh and new again.  Who wouldn’t be happy cooking and even cleaning up in this kitchen?!
